Program Description
Students have an exciting opportunity to partake in a twenty day trip to northern India to travel and learn about Indian history, culture and religions. This course will be supplemented by bi-weekly meetings throughout the fall 2009 semester and through required readings, films and guest speakers. At the end of the course students will have an understanding of the historical and cultural patterns of the Indian people; have developed a deeper understanding of the dominant religions of India; and will be able to assess their own values and comfort levels in traveling in and interacting with a different culture.
India
Participants will have the rare opportunity to visit various cities throughout India including, Delhi, Mathura and Vrindavan, Agra, Khajuraho, Allahabad, Varanasi, Sarnath, Bodhgaya and Kolkata. India is the largest democracy in the world. The capital city of Delhi houses the Parliament and is a blend of historical ruins, museums, street bazaars and cosmopolitan culture. Agra, famous for the Taj Mahal in addition to other forts, palaces and mausoleums built during the Mughal empire.
Courses
Upon successful completion, students will receive three credits for this program. Students will enroll in HDFS 426/626 – Special Topics: Culture & Religions of India, for 3 credits.
Estimated Costs
The program cost will be determined by the number of participants shortly after the application deadline. The program cost includes tuition and fees, health insurance, internatioanl student ID card, housing throughout India, local transportation, student visa, flight and all meals.
Passport fees and personal expenses are not included in the program costs and are paid directly by the student.
Eligible students can use their financial aid to help pay these expenses. Need based scholarships are available to eligible Wisconsin residents. If using financial aid for this experience, make sure to contact your financial aid counselor at the start of the fall semester if additional funding is needed.

Eligibility
This program is open to undergraduate or graduate students in any program but is most useful for students in Human Development and Family Studies, Psychology, and students interested in culture and religion. Applicants must be a sophomore at time of participation and in good academic standing with a 2.5 minimum GPA. Students below a GPA of 2.5 may seek permission from the instructor. This trip will require stamina and cultural sensitivity. Please consider these criteria when you apply.
Housing and Meals
Students will be staying in 2-3 star hotels throughout the duration of the trip. Daily meals are included in the cost of the program.
Passport/Visa
All students must have a valid U.S. passport for entrance into India. The current passport fee is $100. Students will also be required to apply for a visa. Keep in mind that you will need to have already obtained a passport in order to successfully apply for a visa. If students already have a passport, they must check the dates of validity. It must be valid for six months beyond the return date to the US.
Application Procedures
Please make an appointment with the Office of International Education (OIE), 400 Bowman Hall, to review and receive the application materials. Completed forms are returned to OIE. A $100 nonrefundable application fee is paid to the Student Business Services Office located in the Administration Building at time of application. Once accepted by UW-Stout, a $200 nonrefundable service fee will be required to hold a place in the program.
