Responsibilities
The campus computer network at UW-Stout provides access to computing and information facilities, including electronic mail and the Internet - a worldwide network of independent computer networks. All UW-Stout students, staff and faculty may use email and the Internet by first establishing a personal account on the network. Having an account is a privilege, in exchange for which you must agree to certain responsibilities:
- Keep your password private; do not let others use your personal account.
- Delete or off-load mail messages to save disk space.
- Be conservative in your use of all network resources.
- Be courteous and considerate of the rights of others.
- Avoid lengthy Internet sessions, especially sessions not related to coursework.
- Respect the fact that, at UW-Stout, the primary use of the Internet network is academic; teaching, class assignments, research and communication, and administration.
Unacceptable Actions
The following actions are considered unacceptable and participation in them may result in disciplinary actions and/or the loss of your Internet account and privileges:
- Using another person's computer account without permission.
- Intentionally disrupting the work of other people.
- Using abusive, objectionable, or threatening language in mail messages.
- Harassing other users through electronic means.
- Sending electronic chain letters.
- Causing network congestion by flooding the network with mail to lists or individuals.
- Using the network during long periods of time for non-University purposes.
- Placing unlawful information on the network or using the network to commit a crime.
- Using the network for commercial use or personal gain.
Other Restrictions
Playing games on the Internet is not considered an academic activity. Technology and Information Services may restrict access for game players in order to conserve network resources for academic uses. The same restrictions may apply to Chat rooms where the discussion is non-academic.
Logging onto your personal account on the network constitutes agreement to the above guidelines. Remember that as a user of the Internet network, you are accountable for your actions when accessing network services.
