[hidetoc]FirstSearch, WorldCat and BadgerCat provide access to article citation, worldwide library holdings and holdings in Wisconsin libraries. The Bibliography of the History of Art indexes and abstracts journal articles, art-related books, conference proceedings and dissertations, exhibition and dealers' catalogs.
FirstSearch - Basic Search and View Citations
Step 1 - Start at the Library Home Page (http://www.uwstout.edu/lib/).
Step 2 - Select Indexes and Databases.
Step 3 - Select FirstSearch (for periodical
article citations) under Major Vendors.
Select the Bibliography of the History of Art from the
Alpha List of Databases (right column).
Step 4 - Select a Database (only in FirstSearch).
- Click on List All Databases.
- Double-click on a Database, ex: BusIndustry
Step 5 - Type in a search term in the Keyword Search Box, ex: identity theft, click on Submit.
Step 6 - View Article Citations
- Citations are displayed in the List of Records in reverse chronological order (newest first).
- Click on the blue underlined article title to view an abstract (summary), and other document details including source (periodical title), volume, issue number, date and page(s).
- If the citation is not of interest, click on the List of Records button to go back to the search results.
- Symbols abd Notes: Article Availability
- Click on Libraries Worldwide to see other libraries who own the periodical title.
- Click on Search the Catalog at Your Library to search the Stout Library Catalog.
None
of the articles are full text. Click "Find it!"
to generate a menu that may provide the following options.:
- A link to the full text article in another database.
- A link to the Stout Library Catalog to search for holdings in the library's Periodicals Collection.
- A link to the ILLiad form to request the article from another library (interlibrary loan).
- A link to Google, the search engine. Occasionally, some articles are free full text on the Web.
- A link to the Ask a Librarian form, if you have a question.
Marking Multiple Records to Retain
- After displaying the title listing, click in the check box at the left to mark records.
- Click on the Marked Records button to display the records. Use this for printing, e-mailing, or saving.
Print, E-mail, or Save Article Citations
Internet Explorer (IE) is the Internet browser used on the library's computers. The following procedures must be used for printing, e-mailing, and saving, or problems will subsequently occur. This is due to FirstSearch being frames oriented while IE is not. These procedures also apply when using IE on personal computers. The only difference occurs while saving from the File, Save browser menu functions which are configured to the computer that is being used.
Use the Print/E-mail buttons or FirstSearch links whenever possible -- not the browser toolbar (ex: Internet Explorer) commands.
Print:
- Display the record(s).
- Click on the Print button located above the record to the left.
- The Print Option menu will appear, select the Printer.
- Click on the Print button.
E-mail:
- Display the record(s).
- Click on the E-mail button located above the record to the left.
- Type in your full e-mail address, ex: smithp@uwstout.edu.
- Other boxes are optional, ex: subject.
- Click on Send.
Save:
- Insert a formatted, 3 1/2" Floppy Disk in the A drive, a Zip disk in the Zip drive (Removable Disk), Jump Drive (USB port), formatted CD-R disc, or save to the campus server (H drive).
- Display the record(s).
- From the browser toolbar, click on File, then Save As. The Save As menu will appear.
- Select a drive, 3 1/2" Floppy Disc, Removable Disk (Zip), Jump Drive, CD-R or H drive.
- Type in a file name, ex: identity.
- Under "Save as type," select Web Page, HTML only.
- Click on Save.
Full-Text Databases
There are currently two full-text databases available in FirstSearch for Stout users. These include:
- World Almanac - includes Funk and Wagnall's New Encyclopedia and four almanacs.
- Worldscope - financial reports on companies worldwide.
The full text will be included with the record.
Journal Title Search
To locate an article citation from a specific journal use these steps:
Step 1 - Start at the Library Home Page (http://www.uwstout.edu/lib/).
Step 2 - Select Indexes and Databases.
Step 3 - Select FirstSearch (for periodical article citations).
Step 4 - Select a Database.
- Click on List All Databases.
- Double-click on a Database, ex: BusIndustry
Step 5 - Click on the Advanced Search button.
Step 6 - Search the Database.
- Type in a search in one box, ex: identity theft.
- Type in the periodical title in the next box, ex: American Banker.
- Click on the pull down menu next to the periodical title and click on Source.
- Click on Search.
Step 7 - View Article Citations.
- Citations are displayed in the List of Records in reverse chronological order.
- Click on the blue underlined article title to view an abstract (summary), and other document details including source (periodical title), volume, issue number, date and page(s).
- If the citation is not of interest, click on the List of Records button to go back to the search results.

WorldCat and BadgerCat
WorldCat - provides records to library holdings from around the world. Over 62 million records are included in the database
BadgerCat - provides library holdings to libraries in Wisconsin and includes all the searching functionality that WorldCat provides including the ability to search subsets of Wisconsin libraries, ex: Wisconsin Colleges and Universities.
WorldCat - Basic Search and View Records

Step 2 - Select Indexes and Databases.
Step 3 - Select WorldCat under Major Vendors. The Basic Search screen will appear.
Step 4 - Select WorldCat by clicking on the Down Arrow to the right of the "Search the Database" box.
Step 5 - Search World Cat.
- Type in a keyword, ex: identity theft.
- Click on Search.
Step 6 - View Records.
- Tabs located above the record list indicate the number of records for different media types such as books, internet sites, souind recordings, computer software, etc.
- Each record contains the item title, author, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, item type, ex: book, a link to how many libraries have the item, and if the Stout Library has the item.
- Click on the blue underlined Title to view the complete
record. Not all items are available in the Stout Library.
- Click on "Libraries Worldwide that Own Item" to see a list of libraries that can be used to request the item. Wisconsin libraries will be listed first.
- Click on "Request This Item" to access the ILLiad form to request the item from another library (interlibrary loan).
BadgerCat - Basic Search and View Records
Step 1 - Start at the Library Home Page (http://www.uwstout.edu/lib/).
Step 2 - Select Indexes and Databases.
Step 3 - Select WorldCat under Major Vendors. The Basic Search screen will appear.
Step 4 - Select BadgerCat by clicking on the Down Arrow to the right of the "Search the Database" box.
Step 5 - If desired, limit the BadgerCat search to a subset of Wisconsin libraries, by clicking on the Down Arrow and selecting a subset, ex: Wisconsin Colleges & Universities.
Step 6 - Search BadgerCat.
- Type in a keyword, ex: identity theft.
- Click on Search.
Step 7 - View Records.
- Tabs located above the record list indicate the number of records for different media types such as books, internet sites, souind recordings, computer software, etc.
- Each record contains the item title, author, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, item type, ex: book, a link to how many libraries have the item, and if the Stout Library has the item.
- Click on the blue underlined Title to view the complete
record. Not all items are available in the Stout Library.
- Click on "Libraries that Own Item" to see a list of libraries (either the default "Wisconsin Libraries" or subset) that can be used to request the item.
- Click on "Request This Item" to access the ILLiad form to request the item from another library (interlibrary loan).
Remote Access to the Databases via an Internet Service Provider
This
symbol indicates restricted library resources for use by UW-Stout students,
faculty and staff.
When accessing library resources using an Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as America Online, Airstream or a local provider, a username and password prompt will appear.
A Stout e-mail username and password is required. Distance Education students and students taking short term/weekend classes may not have activated e-mail accounts. If a Stout e-mail account is not activated, follow the Remote Access Instructions or contact Ask5000 help desk (telephone) 715-232-5000 or ask5000@uwstout.edu.
