This is a guide to some of the resources available on the World Wide Web and in the Library which deal with careers and career opportunities. It is intended to assist career and job researchers, vocational educators, guidance counselors, and job hunters among others.

WWW SITES

Many resources are available on the World Wide Web. Try searching the word "career" on Yahoo! or browse their Business and Economy: Employment section. Other sites below can get you started as well. Some provide career exploration, while others offer specific skills for job hunting and career planning. Some are full service sites with job listings as well. For sites dedicated to job listings, see Employment Opportunities further down this page.

STOUT LIBRARY CATALOG

Use the Stout Library Catalog to identify books and audiovisual materials about your topic. Use a keyword guided search and then click on the Long View. You can then explore any of the listed subject headings by selecting the link. Some examples of subject terms you can use are:

INDUSTRY INFORMATION

An industry's financial stability is a good indicator of its future job markets. See the following sources for information about manufacturing, wholesale, retail, and service industries.

DIRECTORIES

Telephone and Business Directories

Many yellow page telephone directories and business directories are available on the WWW.

Print Telephone Directories for many large U.S. cities and to most Wisconsin cities and towns are located in Stack 18 of the Reference Collection. Other directories are classed in the Reference Collection by call number.

Manufacturing and Industry Directories

Manufacturing Directories for most states can be found in the "T12" section of the Reference collection. These provide address, annual sales, and number of employees for manufacturing companies. The directories are usually arranged alphabetically with indexes by city and product. The Library also owns many industry-specific directories, such as:

ANNUAL REPORTS / STATISTICS

Annual Reports

Many companies have home pages and annual reports on the World Wide Web. Try Annual Reports. Or use Google to search for a company name. Other financial information can be found using Disclosure Reports in Lexis Nexis, or Hoover's Company Records in Proquest.

Employment trends, business and industry standings, wage and salary information among other factual data, can be found in statistical tables. Some sources of statistical tables follow:

INDEXES AND DATABASES

Stout Users Only

Use the Indexes and Databases to identify articles in journals, magazines, and newspapers. Many indexes provide full text articles.

PERIODICALS AND NEWSPAPERS

Many newspapers which include classified and employment ads are available on the WWW. Consult the library's Newspapers on the Web page, or browse the ads of current print newspapers in files on second floor in the Periodicals Collection.

GEOGRAPHICAL SOURCES

For many job applicants, location is a key factor in determining whether to take an offered position. On the Web, use Google to search for the name of your city or town. Many have home pages.

Local chambers of commerce can provide extensive information about a particular town or city. Write to them at addresses identified in the World Chamber of Commerce Directory REF HF294 .W64x

WRITING FOR MORE INFORMATION

The Library is not the only place which offers information about jobs and careers. Find addresses of information-providing agencies in the following resources and write to them for literature about your chosen field.

UW-STOUT CAREER SERVICES

Career Exploration Services

Career Exploration Services are available in 11 BH. They offer individual assistance, group services, and print and electronic resources.

UW-Stout Career Services

This office on campus works with students in all aspects of their employment search. Career Services is located in the Administration Building. A resource library containing career information, directories, vacancy lists from other schools and agencies, and files of literature provided by companies interviewing on campus, among others, is available. Counselors assist students by appointment in resume development, interviewing skills and other aspects of job hunting. Visit the Career Services Office for specific assistance.

WWW Search Engines

The search engines that are available on the WWW vary in depth and coverage. Explore the search options to find relevant WWW sites. For a list of available search engines and WWW directories, e.g. Google or Yahoo, use Searching the Web from the Library Home Page.
